How many creatives per ad set Meta allows and advises

Meta's own number is at least 20 diversified ads in an Advantage+ shopping campaign, and its limit is 50 ads in any one ad set.
For a single ad set, Meta's page on managing ad volume gives no number. It says to decrease ads per ad set and keep the creative assets in each one diverse. It also counts ads, not creatives, and one ad can hold up to 10 creative assets.
A figure such as three to six ads per ad set, which many guides give, comes from the guide that gives it. No Meta page read for this post carries it, so look for the Meta page behind any guide that quotes one.
How many ads per ad set Meta lets you run
Meta lets you have up to 50 ads in each ad set, and ads you have turned off count too. It is a limit, written on Meta's page on ad account limits. A regular ad account and an account with a Meta account manager get the same figure.
Meta's advice points the other way. Meta's page on managing ad volume says that when too many ads run at once, each one is shown less often, fewer leave the learning phase, and more budget is spent before delivery is optimised.
The same page separates ads from creatives. One ad can hold up to 10 creative assets, so a store can put ten pictures or videos in a single ad. Meta's page on the flexible ad format describes it, and says the feature may not be available to you, so check what your own Ads Manager offers.
How many ad sets per campaign
Meta recommends no more than 70 ad sets in a campaign that uses Advantage+ campaign budget, and it limits a regular ad account to 5,000 ad sets in all. Neither figure tells you how many to start with.
Past 70, Meta's best practices for Advantage+ campaign budget say you are limited in what you can edit after publishing. They add that the more ad sets and ads a campaign holds, the longer it may spend in the learning phase.
The advice that helps a small store is about the opposite problem. Meta's page on combining ad sets says that when you run too many at once, each gets fewer chances to learn and fewer results. It suggests breakdowns in reporting instead of a separate ad set for each audience.
For Advantage+ sales campaigns, Meta's developer documentation says you may now create more than one ad set in a campaign.
How many ads should I run on Facebook at once
The number Meta gives is at least 20 diversified ads in an Advantage+ shopping campaign, with 20 to 30 per cent of the budget going to test new ones. It is a recommendation, it was published on Meta's business news page on 19 November 2024, and it names the campaign, not the ad set.
The post on why Meta asks for different ads covers what counts as diversified.
The limit is higher and sits on your Facebook Page. A Page that advertises less than 100,000 US dollars in its highest spending month can have 250 ads running or in review at once. Pages that spend more get 1,000, 5,000 or 20,000. Meta's page on ad limits per Page gives the reason: running too many ads at once can hurt performance.
What it means on a small budget
The number that matters most is on Meta's page on the learning phase: an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit.
Say you optimise for purchases and each one costs you 14 in ad spend. Fifty a week is 700, or 100 a day, for one ad set. On a smaller budget the Delivery column can read Learning limited. Meta says that is not a penalty but a sign the budget is not being spent effectively.
Meta's page on learning limited lists a low budget and running too many ads at the same time among the causes. Its fixes include combining ad sets, widening the audience, raising the budget, and optimising for an event that happens more often, such as add to cart in place of purchase.
Adding an ad is an edit too. Meta's page on significant edits lists adding a new ad to your ad set as one, and a significant edit can send the ad set back into learning. So check each ad before it goes in, using five checks before an ad runs.
Which number of ads suits your budget is judgment, and none of the Meta pages above gives a ratio to check it against. Read together, they point to a single ad set in which each ad makes a different case, with new ads added as a batch rather than one at a time.
If your budget buys well over 50 results a week, you have room for more ads or a second ad set. If it buys fewer, start with fewer ads.
Where Meta's own pages disagree
Meta's news page tells advertisers to launch new ads on a regular schedule, weekly for the leaders, and to keep at least 20 diversified ads live. Its help centre warns that too many ads leave each one with less delivery. The page on ad volume names the tension: testing new creative is still important, and advertisers should balance it against giving the delivery system ample opportunity to learn about each ad. It does not say where the balance sits.
The 20 was written about Advantage+ shopping campaigns. Meta's developer documentation now calls Advantage+ sales campaigns the updated version of those, so reading the number across is reasonable, but the page that gives it does not say so.
Meta tells advertisers using Advantage+ campaign budget to make changes to campaign settings in bulk, because one at a time may send the campaign back into learning each time. No page says that about ads in so many words, so adding new ads as one batch is a reading of it, not Meta's instruction.
Choosing which ads make the set
Once you know your count, the work is deciding which reasons to buy get an ad. Nomi does that part. Ask for a campaign in a session and the strategist plans the campaign before it draws anything. It checks what it holds about your brand, reads the ads running in your market, and comes back with what it would run. You change that in a sentence.
