How to make AI ads for a Shopify store that hold up

An AI tool can turn a store address into ads in a minute. Whether you can run them depends on what you gave it first and what you checked after. Both lists are short.

You paste your store address into an AI ad tool. A minute later there are twelve ads on the screen, and for a moment the job looks finished.

Then you look closer. The jar has a label you never printed, the headline promises a discount that ended in spring, and the colours belong to somebody else's shop.

The tool worked from what it was given. Making AI ads for a Shopify store comes down to two short lists: what you hand over before anything is drawn, and what you check before anything runs.

AI ads for a Shopify store start from your store, so start there too

Most of these tools begin the same way. They take your store address or sync your product catalogue, and they build the ad from what they find: the product photos, the titles, the descriptions, the prices.

That makes your product pages the brief, whether you meant them to be or not. A page with one dim photo and a two-line description gives the tool one dim photo and two lines to work from.

The guides that rank for this search are mostly lists of tools. Which tool you choose matters less than what it finds when it arrives.

Give it the photos you want copied

The product photo decides more than anything else you hand over. An ad can change the background, the light and the words. The product has to stay the thing a buyer will unpack.

Shopify's help centre says a square product image usually displays best at 2048 by 2048 pixels, and that it accepts images up to 5000 by 5000 pixels and under 20 MB. It names PNG as the best file type for most product images, then JPEG.

Which photos to give it is judgment. Give it one photo taken straight on, with the whole label readable. Give it one that shows the size of the thing, in a hand or beside something familiar. If the product comes in several colours or flavours, give it a photo of each, named so nobody has to guess which is which.

Leave out the photos you would not want repeated: an old label, a discontinued size, a sample from before the packaging changed.

Write down the rules and the offer before you ask

A tool can read what your store says. It cannot read what you decided and never typed anywhere.

Brand rules fit on half a page. Write which colour is the main one and which is only for buttons. Describe how you sound in two lines, with a sentence you would write and one you never would. List the claims you do not make, such as anything medical if you sell supplements.

Then the offer. Decide the price, the one promise and the buyer before the tool decides for you. Say you sell candles and a banner from last year's sale is still sitting in your theme. A tool reading the store may treat that sale as live.

An ad makes one promise. If you do not choose it, the tool picks the first one it finds, and the first one on a product page is rarely the reason people buy.

Know what Meta's own tools change

You already have one AI ad tool, because it sits inside Ads Manager. Meta says Advantage+ creative uses AI to generate and enhance ad variations across single image, video and carousel formats.

Meta's page adds two things. Some enhancements may be turned on by default, and you can turn them off at any time. And Meta recommends checking and approving the previews of all your ads before they go live.

The variations can go further than a new background. When Meta announced image generation for advertisers in May 2024, its example was a coffee brand, and the variations it described included adjustments to the coffee cup itself.

For a product somebody will hold next week, a different cup is the wrong product.

Check five things before the ad runs

Each takes a minute.

  • The product. Put the ad beside the real photo and compare the shape, the colour, the lid, the number of items in the pack.
  • The lettering. Read every word on the label in the picture, letter by letter. Lettering that is nearly right is easy to miss at a glance.
  • The words. Check the price, the discount and the delivery promise against the store as it is today.
  • The claim. Ask whether you could prove the sentence if a customer wrote in about it.
  • The shape. Look at the ad in each size you plan to run, and see what is cut off or covered.

Meta also labels AI ads. Meta's post on generative AI transparency says it began labelling ads created or significantly edited with its own generative AI tools in 2024, with an AI info label. In an update dated 1 June 2026, it said it would also begin automatically detecting ads created or edited with third-party AI tools, and show the label in an About this ad section in the three-dot menu on the ad.

Meta's 2025 post also said that when its tools add an AI-generated photorealistic human, the label sits next to the Sponsored label, where everybody sees it. Meta notes that this may vary by region. Assume a buyer can find out the picture was made with AI, and make sure the product in it is the real one.

Where an AI ad stops helping

An AI tool makes the ad faster and leaves the offer as it was. A product nobody wants at that price will not sell from a sharper picture.

It also knows only what is on the page. It does not know your margin, which product you have too much of, or that the blue one is the one people reorder. Choosing what to advertise is still your call.

A drawn scene is no evidence either. If a tool invents a picture of your product in use, do not let it show a result the product does not deliver.

Skipping the retyping

The first list in this post is a brief, and most tools make you write it again every time you ask.

Nomi keeps it. It reads your site and drafts what you sell, how you sound and what your pictures obey, and you keep or change each answer once. When you attach a product photo, the shape, the packaging, the label text, the colours and the logos are copied as they are, and only the light, the background and the props change. Before it draws, it shows you the idea and the angle it is testing.
